OLYMPIC SPIRIT FLOURISHES IN MUNICH
News | June 24th, 2010
Two days of Olympic celebrations in Munich came to a spectacular climax last night when over 30,000 sports fans joined the Munich 2018 team at the city's Olympic Stadium to mark Olympic Day and watch the crucial Germany v Ghana FIFA World Cup match live on a giant screen.
The event at the 1972 Games' most iconic venue followed Tuesday's jubilant festivities on the Marienplatz, when thousands of German sports fans gathered in the historic city centre to celebrate the IOC's decision to name Munich an official Candidate City for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
CEO of the Munich 2018 Bid Committee, Willy Bogner, and senior bid colleagues are still in Lausanne for key meetings with the Olympic Family, but Bogner took time out from his vital fact-finding mission to express his delight that the whole of Bavaria has been united in a compelling display of the spirit of Olympism:
‘The Olympic Day is an excellent way to teach young people about Olympic values. Society has much to learn from sport. We want to spread the Olympic message across Munich, Bavaria and Germany, and to teach the importance of striving for excellence in the spirit of fair competition. Whether it is a FIFA World Cup game or a race to host the Olympic Games - our core values of excellence, respect and fairness are indispensable.'
