Lausanne, 22 June 2010: Thousands of people gathered in Munich's Marienplatz and tens of millions across Germany today celebrated the news that Munich has been named an official Candidate City for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games after scoring exceptionally highly in the IOC Candidature Acceptance Working Group's report.
A senior delegation of Munich 2018 Bid Committee officials, led by CEO Willy Bogner and Chair Katarina Witt, were present to hear the 1.30pm announcement at the IOC's Lausanne headquarters.
The official IOC report on the Applicant City files highlighted four core strengths of Munich's bid: general infrastructure; sports venues; environmental conditions and impact; and experience in past sports events. Munich was awarded the highest or joint-highest grade in seven of the IOC Working Group's eleven criteria.
Willy Bogner, CEO of the Munich Olympic Bid, was delighted with the IOC's decision, and is already eagerly anticipating the next phase:
'We were very proud of our Applicant City file; the innovative plan we proposed was excellent in both scope and detail. The IOC has recognised the incredible strengths of the Munich bid - our spectacular natural treasures, our uniquely warm, friendly culture, and our fantastic sporting heritage. This will give us lots of confidence for the bidding phase.
