Munich 2018 – A Wonderful Celebration of Winter Sport

If the Bavarian capital is selected to host the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, it will become the first city in history to host both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. Having hosted the Summer Olympics in 1972, Munich is dreaming of using the living legacy of Munich Olympic Park and the world-class venues of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Lake Konigsee to celebrate the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Indeed, Munich offers a magical setting for the Games. When weather conditions are right, the Alpine peaks appear to rise up right at the edge of the city. And visionary architects brought the mountains right into the city itself when they built the bold peaks of the world-famous tent roof over Munich Olympic Stadium, which is one of the city's foremost landmarks.

Germany is a nation of avid winter sports fans, and every year at a range of sold-out winter sport competitions, they demonstrate their passion for snow and ice and their love of athletic achievement. And Munich hopes it will be welcoming athletes and visitors from all around the world to a joyous and friendly global winter sports festival in 2018. After the stunning success of the 2006 FIFA World CupTM , which left a legacy of lasting friendships across the country and around the world, Germany envisons a new level of public celebration for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Furthermore, through the Games, Munich plans to set a clear benchmark for the sustainability of large-scale sporting events. It aims, in particular, to accelerate the development of a new generation of ecological standards, creating energy+plus Villages for the athletes, reducing the impact of travel by utilizing the region's mass transit infrastructure and electric vehicles, limiting new construction to sites already used as sports venues and leaving a legacy that benefits each host community and the entire region. The objective of Munich 2018 is to utilise synergies between tradition and forward-looking initiatives.

The German Olympic Sports Confederation, the City of Munich, the State of Bavaria, the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the district of Berchtesgadener Land are all shareholders in the bid organisation, and together they will be doing everything they can to persuade the Olympic world that the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Munich would be a wonderful celebration of winter sport.
